Description

Nipponanthemum nipponicum, commonly known as Montauk Daisy or Nippon Daisy, is a hardy, herbaceous perennial plant hailing from Japan. This attractive species belongs to the Asteraceae family and typically grows to a height of about 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm). It features dark green, serrated leaves and produces a profusion of large, daisy-like white flowers with bright yellow centers, which bloom in late summer and early autumn, adding a burst of color to the garden when many other plants are fading. Montauk Daisies are renowned for their resilience and adaptability, thriving in a variety of soil types and tolerating coastal conditions. They make excellent additions to garden borders, rock gardens, and cut flowers. Pruning them in early summer can help maintain a compact shape and encourage more prolific blooming. This low-maintenance perennial is adored for its late-season beauty and its ability to attract pollinators, making it a favorite among gardeners looking for reliable, late-blooming flowers.  Zones 5-9

Germination

Nipponanthemum nipponicum, or Montauk Daisy, can be grown from seeds, though it s worth noting that it can be a bit slow to establish from seed. To germinate these seeds, start indoors in late winter or early spring. Sow the seeds in a seed tray or small pots with a well-draining seed starting mix. Lightly press the seeds onto the soil surface without covering them, as they require light for germination. Maintain consistent moisture by misting or using a humidity dome, and place the tray or pots in a warm location, around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Germination can take several weeks, so be patient. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or into the garden, spacing them about 18 inches (45 cm) apart. Montauk Daisies are known for their longevity and late-season blooms, making them a charming addition to any garden.
