Description

Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, is a herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia but is now widely distributed across North America. Catnip typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet (30 to 90 cm) and features aromatic, heart-shaped, gray-green leaves with serrated edges. Its small, tubular, white to pale purple flowers bloom in clusters during the summer months and attract pollinators like bees. What makes catnip particularly famous is its effect on cats. The plant contains a compound called nepetalactone, which induces a euphoric and playful reaction in many felines when they come into contact with it, whether by sniffing, licking, or rolling in it. Catnip is also used in herbal remedies for humans and has a mild, soothing effect when brewed as tea. It is a relatively low-maintenance plant, making it a popular choice for home gardens and cat owners alike.  Zones 3-7

Germination

Nepeta cataria, or catnip, can be grown from seeds with relative ease. To start the germination process, sow the seeds in a well-draining, sandy soil mix in either late winter or early spring, about 1 4 inch (6 mm) deep. Catnip seeds require consistent moisture and warmth for successful germination. To maintain humidity, cover the seed tray or pot with a plastic dome or clear plastic wrap. Place it in a warm location with indirect sunlight, ideally around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Germination typically takes around 7 to 14 days. Once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots or into the garden, spacing them about 18 inches (45 cm) apart. Catnip is a hardy plant, and with proper care, it will flourish, providing you with fresh leaves and flowers for your cats or for various culinary uses.
