Description

Lonicera sempervirens, commonly known as the Rose Honeysuckle or Trumpet Honeysuckle, is a charming and versatile native vine found in the eastern and southeastern regions of North America. This deciduous vine is celebrated for its exquisite clusters of tubular, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. These blossoms typically range in color from vibrant shades of coral to red-orange, and they attract a wide variety of pollinators, including hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, with their sweet nectar. The dark green, semi-evergreen leaves provide an attractive backdrop to the profusion of blooms. Coral Honeysuckle is known for its ornamental value and its ability to cover fences, trellises, and arbors with its twining vines. Beyond its beauty, it is also valued for its adaptability, being drought-tolerant once established and thriving in a range of soil types. With its enchanting appearance and wildlife-friendly nature, Lonicera sempervirens is a cherished addition to gardens and landscapes, offering both aesthetic appeal and ecological benefits.  Zones 5-10

Germination

Germinating Lonicera sempervirens seeds can be a rewarding process. To enhance germination, stratify the seeds by placing them in a damp paper towel or peat moss and then sealing them in a plastic bag or container. Refrigerate the bag for about 30-90 days to simulate winter conditions. After stratification, sow the seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix in a seed tray or small pots. Lightly press the seeds onto the surface of the soil, as they require light for germination, and do not bury them. Provide indirect sunlight or use grow lights to maintain a temperature around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can be slow, taking several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden, ensuring they receive full sun to partial shade. Lonicera sempervirens seeds may require some time and attention, but the beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers and wildlife attraction make it worth the effort.
