Description

Corylus americana, commonly known as American Hazelnut or American Filbert, is a deciduous shrub native to North America. It typically grows to a height of 6 to 12 feet, forming a dense and rounded shape. The leaves are oval with serrated edges, creating an attractive backdrop for seasonal features. In early spring, the shrub produces clusters of pendulous, yellowish-green catkins that dangle from its branches, adding a touch of charm to the landscape. As the seasons progresses, Corylus americana develops edible hazelnuts enclosed in a leafy husk. These nuts are a tasty treat for humans and provide food for various wildlife species. With its adaptability to different soil types and lighting conditions, this versatile shrub is a valuable addition to gardens, offering both ornamental beauty and practical benefits.  Zones 4-8

 Germination

Corylus americana can be germinated successfully with specific steps. Start by stratifying the seeds by placing them in a moistened medium, such as peat moss or sand, and storing them in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator for about 90-120 days to simulate winter conditions. After stratification, sow the seeds in a well-draining seed starting mix at a depth of about 1 inch in individual containers or seed trays. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as excessive moisture can lead to rot. Place the containers in a cool location with temperatures around 60-70°F (15-21°C) to encourage germination, which typically occurs within 4-6 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide them with bright, indirect light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them into their permanent location. With attention to these guidelines, successful germination and healthy growth of Corylus americana seeds can be achieved.
