Germination

To germinate Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata plena seeds. Since Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata plena seeds have a hard outer coat, they benefit from stratification to break dormancy. Place the seeds in a damp paper towel or a plastic bag filled with moistened vermiculite or sand, and refrigerate them for 3-4 weeks. After stratification, prepare a seed starting tray or small pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a combination of peat moss and perlite. Moisten the soil evenly, ensuring it s not waterlogged. Sow the Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata plena seeds evenly over the surface of the soil and lightly press them into the soil with your fingertips. Cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil or vermiculite. Place the tray or pots in a cool location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 55-65°F (13-18°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not saturated by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Germination typically occurs within 3-6 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide adequate spacing if growing in trays, or transplant them into individual pots when they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering, light, and nutrients as they grow into mature Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata plena plants.
