Description

Allium howelii var. clokeyi, also known as Clokey s onion, is a perennial herb native to the western United States. It features slender, grass-like leaves and grows up to 18 inches tall. In late spring to early summer, it produces attractive, rounded clusters of delicate, pink to lavender flowers. This native onion species thrives in rocky, well-draining soil, often found in open woodlands and meadows. Its lovely blooms attract pollinators and contribute to the biodiversity of its natural habitat, making it a cherished addition to native plant gardens and restoration projects.  Zones 4-8  Pictures courtesy of Alan B.

Germination

To successfully germinate Allium howelii v. clokeyi seeds, begin by cleaning them thoroughly to remove any debris. Plant the seeds in well-draining soil, burying them at a depth of about twice their diameter. For optimal germination, Allium howelii v. clokeyi seeds benefit from a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. Place the planted seeds in a container or plastic bag with a moistened substrate, such as vermiculite or peat moss, and refrigerate them for several weeks. Following stratification, sow the seeds in their final outdoor location, choosing a well-drained spot with exposure to sunlight. Maintain consistent soil moisture until germination, which typically occurs within a few weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are well-established, they can be transplanted into their permanent position, and Purdy s fringed onion will grace the garden with its unique fringed foliage and charming flowers.
